Type Tricks™ is a QuarkXTensions™ software module that adds typographic utilities to QuarkXPress™. Type Tricks is a native QuarkXPress 4.0 XTensions™ module that implements some of the features of Thing-a-ma-bob™ and Bobzilla™ (XTensions modules to QuarkXPress 3.xx).

Minimum System Requirements
QuarkXPress 4.0 or QuarkXPress Passport™ 4.0
Installing Type Tricks
• Quit QuarkXPress.
• Drag-copy the Type Tricks file (Type Tricks.xnt for Windows) into the XTension folder (a subfolder of QuarkXPress).
• Launch QuarkXPress to access the features of Type Tricks.
Feature Usage
Make Fraction
Make Fraction enables you to format fractions automatically. A fraction cannot contain any spaces and must contain a front slash (/) character to separate the numerator from the denominator. The Make Fraction menu item becomes active when a fraction is selected or the cursor is placed adjacent to (and on the same line as) any of the characters that make up the fraction. Examples of fractions that could be formatted are: a/b, 1/2, 13/16, 1/x, and (a+b)/c.
To convert characters into a fraction:
1. Select the characters that you want to format.
2. Choose Style —> Type Style —> Make Fraction.
NOTE: When you select a range of characters and apply Make Fraction, only the selected characters are transformed (provided they contain a front slash). If you place the cursor adjacent to any of the characters that are part of the fraction, the entire fraction will be formatted.
The characters will be converted according to the formatting specified in the Fraction/Price Preferences dialog box (Edit —> Preferences —> Fraction/Price). Within the Fraction area of the dialog box, the Numerator, Slash, and Denominator fields allow you to specify the size, spacing, and placement of the fraction components.
Make Price
Make Price enables you to format prices automatically. Make Price is available when text that can be formatted as a price (such as $1.49, £20.00, and a.bc) is selected or the cursor is adjacent to (and on the same line as) any of characters.
To convert characters to a price:
1. Select the characters you want to format.
2. Choose Style —> Type Style —> Make Price.
When you apply Make Price, QuarkXPress automatically applies the superior style to the characters that follow the radix (decimal symbol). Since the radix symbol can be either a comma or a period, Make Price considers the last comma or period in the price as the radix.
The Fraction/Price Preferences dialog box (Edit —> Preferences —> Fraction/Price) contains two check boxes in the Price area that enable you to control the way QuarkXPress creates prices when you apply Make Price.
Fraction/Price Preferences
The appearance of converted fractions and prices is determined by the values and selections entered in the Fraction/Price Preferences dialog box (Edit —> Preferences —> Fraction/Price).
Fraction Preferences
• Offset — Positions the numerator, denominator, and front slash in relation to the baseline.
• VScale — Determines the height of the numerator, denominator, and front slash as a percentage of font size.
• HScale — Determines the width of the numerator, denominator, and front slash as a percentage of normal character width.
• Kern — Adjusts the spacing between the characters and the front slash.
• Virgule — Substitutes a typesetter’s slash (a thinner, more vertical slash) for a normal front slash character.
Price Preferences
• Underline Cents — Places an underline beneath the cents characters.
• Delete Radix — Removes the decimal or comma character from the price.
Remove Manual Kerning
Remove Manual Kerning enables you to remove all manual kerning applied between characters or to remove kerning from a kerning pair. Remove Manual Kerning is available when a text range is selected that contains one or more sets of manually kerned characters or when the cursor is placed between characters that have kerning applied.
To remove all manual kerning from between characters:
1. Select the range of characters or text that has kerning applied.
2. Choose Utilities —> Remove Manual Kerning.
To remove kerning from a kerning pair:
1. Place the cursor between the characters that have kerning applied.
2. Choose Utilities —> Remove Manual Kerning.
Word Space Tracking
Word Space Tracking enables you to apply tracking to word spaces only. (Tracking values are normally applied between both characters and words.) This feature can be accessed through keyboard commands only.
To apply Word Space Tracking to text:
1. Select the range of characters whose word spacing you want to modify.
2. Enter one of the following keyboard commands:
For Mac OS platform:
To increase space by .05 em, press Command+Control+Shift+]
To increase space by .005 em, press Command+Option+Control+Shift+]
To decrease space by .05 em, press Command+Control+Shift+[
To decrease space by .005 em, press Command+Option+Control+Shift+[
For Windows platform:
To increase space by .05 em, press Control+Shift+]
To increase space by .005 em, press Control+Shift+Alt+]
To decrease space by .05 em, press Control+Shift+[
To decrease space by .005 em, press Control+Shift+Alt+[

The Mac OS keys were taken from Thing-a-ma-bob 1.01. An attempt was made to keep Windows keys equivalent to the Mac OS keys; any differences are due to differences in keyboard layouts between the two platforms.

NOTE: Type Tricks chooses the key set based on the default keyboard map (set in the System) and not the current language in QuarkXPress Passport.
Line Check
Use Line Check to find widows, orphans, loosely justified lines, lines that end with a hyphen, and text box overflow. Line Check moves through a document, highlighting the questionable lines.
Specify Search Criteria
1. Choose Utilities —> Line Check —> Search Criteria to open the Search Criteria dialog box. Check the categories of undesirable typography you want to search for:
• Loose Justification is a justified line containing word or character spaces that exceed the maximum word and character space values in the H&J specifications applied to its paragraph.
• An Auto Hyphenated line ends with a hyphen placed by the automatic hyphenation function.
• A Manual Hyphenated line ends with a hyphen typed in by a user.
• A Widow is the last line of a paragraph, less than a full measure wide, that falls at the top of the following column or page.
• An Orphan is the first line of a paragraph that falls at the bottom of a column or page.
• Text Box Overflow occurs when text cannot be displayed within its text box. This condition is represented by an overflow symbol in the lower right corner of a text box.
2. Click Count to get a count of all typographically undesirable lines. The count for each category appears on the right side of the box.
3. Click OK to close the dialog box after performing the count.
NOTE: The Line Check search criteria you specify become application defaults until you change them. The settings are not document-specific.
To implement a search
1. To search the entire document, place the cursor somewhere in the text and choose Utilities —> Line Check —> First Line. To search from the location of the cursor to the end of the document, place the cursor where you want to start the search and choose Utilities —> Line Check —> Next Line or press Command+; (Windows: Control+;).
2. The first typographically undesirable line is highlighted. You can interrupt the search at any time to fix a line. To continue a search Press Command+; (Windows: Control+;).
3. An alert sounds when the search is complete.

Limitations
Make Fraction/Make Price
1. Once a fraction or price has been converted, you cannot use the Edit —> Undo command to undo the conversion.
2. If text is added directly after removal (deletion) of a fraction, it will contain attributes that were applied to the fraction. If the fraction was deleted by selecting it and deleting or by backspace deleting, a baseline shift will remain as an attribute. To remove the baseline shift, open the Character Attributes dialog box (Style —> Baseline Shift) and remove the baseline shift by setting it to zero or the desired value.
